How to Multiply Your Clients

The exponential power of just asking.

Multiplying Like Rabbits

Do your best clients value what you do so much that they tell all their friends about you? Do they bring new customers right to your doorstep with a warm introduction? Isn’t it amazing how customers can multiply when they start talking about your company?

Every business owner I meet absolutely loves getting referral business from their favourite customers. Very few, however, have built a deliberate and effective marketing strategy to generate more referrals.

Getting More Referrals

The first tactic to generate more referrals is simple – just ASK. If you’re not regularly asking your best clients who they know who would benefit from doing business with you, just asking instead of waiting and hoping for the best can have an immediate impact.

As with any marketing strategy, consistency pays off. That means planning in advance when you’ll ask for referrals and doing it systematically. That could mean:

  • Choosing a time (e.g. every Tuesday, or the first week of each month) to ask for referrals, and a target number of people to ask

  • Asking each new client for referrals at a pre-determined point, like 4 weeks after a project kick off date

However you decide to do it, we want the activity to be repeatable, measurable, and consistent.

In addition to asking for direct referrals, don’t forget the value of social media posts and Google reviews! Next time a client says something nice about why they love working with you, why not capture it in writing, send it back to them, and ask them to post it online where it will be visible? Chances are they’ll be happy to do so – and the easier you make it for them, the more likely they’ll be to follow through.

This Week’s Takeaway

High quality referrals are a natural result of achieving great client results and building a trusting, positive relationship. It’s a simple formula:

Results x Relationship = Referrals

An effective referral strategy relies on results and relationship, but it can be turbocharged with intention and action.
