Overcoming fear of the unknown in pursuit of growth.

What’s Challenging You Right Now?
What are you working on that feels challenging today, but you’re confident that if you persevere, it will pay off in the future?
If the answer is, “nothing”, I’m sorry to say that you’re standing still while your competitors advance.
Personal and professional growth isn’t a comfortable process. It’s marked by moments where you feel out of your depth, unsure of the next move, maybe even scared or incompetent. There’s that sinking feeling when you fully realize just how much you don’t know.
But of course, for those that keep at it, there’s a level of expertise that’s possible on the other side of the discomfort. The inverse of the sinking feeling is when you look back and realize just how far you’ve come.
The Cycle of Learning Starts With Discomfort
That’s the cycle of learning – first, being stretched and uncomfortable, then gaining competence through repeated effort, until finally it becomes so easy you can do it without even thinking about it. It’s like learning a new language. First, it feels awkward and impossible – you use the wrong word and say something dumb. Then, you realize you can get through a simple conversation without a translation app. And eventually, you gain fluency.
It takes courage to put yourself in the uncomfortable phase – the phase of conscious incompetence. Especially for business owners who have advanced in their fields, who are used to being seen as the expert, and who have a team that looks to them for guidance.
And yet, new doors will only open when you take that chance.

This Week’s Takeaway
What can you start to learn today, that will give you a competitive edge and allow you to attract top talent and the best customers 3-5 years from now?
