Compound Interest vs Compound Thinking

How to play the long game, and invest in your success.

Playing the Long Game

When we think of compounding, we usually think of financial investments. In financial markets, a small investment left alone for a long period of time grows to an impressive sum thanks to compound interest.

Great investors are compound thinkers. They’re playing a long game in bite sized increments. They’re consistent, and they’re patient. They know that taken over a period of years or decades, today’s tiny changes and baby steps add up to much more than the sum of their parts.

This mental model applies to arenas well outside our finances. Starting small and being patient for growth leads to massive results.

On the other hand, waiting for the perfect opportunity, a specific level of expertise, and enough time with nothing else to do means never starting.

As Morgan Housel writes, “Good investing isn’t necessarily about earning the highest returns…. It’s about earning pretty good returns that you can stick with and which can be repeated for the longest period of time. That’s when compounding runs wild.”

Whether your investment is money, time, or energy – starting small today and acting consistently over time will almost certainly put you further ahead than waiting for more favourable conditions.
