How to build core strength in your business.

Get Grounded
The trees that survive intense windstorms are the ones with the deepest roots.
The same holds true for a business. Your “roots” are a source of stability and energy, even when bad weather hits. As a leader, your strong values and clear vision will keep you growing while others fall.
If – like many businesses today – you’re facing challenging headwinds, it’s helpful to remember that the deepest roots always grow in the stormiest locations. In other words, you can’t build a resilient business without resistance.
Grow Where You’re Planted
When the metaphorical wind picks up, it’s easy to wish for a different set of circumstances: a better economy, a more predictable market, less competition… But if you’ve seen an unexpected tree on a cliff’s edge, you know that growth can happen in all sorts of challenging conditions.
No successful business has ever waited for clouds to part and the ideal conditions to manifest. As Jim Rohn taught: “Don’t wish it were easier, wish that you were better.”
Your job isn’t to control the weather, it’s to nurture what you’ve planted. The work you put into your business today will determine how well it grows.
Water the roots. Trim the deadwood. Turn toward the sun.
Keep Your Vision Sharp
The same tree might get planted by a squirrel or a gardener. The squirrel stashes the seed and moves on, but the gardener had a vision. They were thinking about the long game – shade, food, maybe even a climbing tree for the next generation.
As you consider your strategy, think like a gardener and hone in on that vision. Clarity about the future of your business gives you direction. It helps you see past the daily chaos and make better decisions under stress.
Work Your Core Values
A business with deep roots has strong core values.
I don’t mean a nice page on your website or a buried PowerPoint from your annual meeting. In fact, most polished corporate values statements totally miss the mark. They describe “who we wish we were,” or “who we want our customers to believe we are.” Your real values show up in your actions and decisions every day.
Writing them down and discussing them with your team and your clients will make them vital to your culture and identity. Weave them through your business practices and make it your default setting to live congruently with them.
When the storm hits, core values provide stability and strength of purpose.

This Week’s Takeaway
Stormy weather may lie ahead. (Zoom out far enough, and it’s a certainty – just as it always has been.) Your strength of purpose and vision for the future are fuel for resilience and growth.
What’s one step you can take today to strengthen your vision and values, even in the face of uncertainty?
