3 Steps to Fire Yourself from Everything You Don’t Want to Do

Is this the “ultimate path to success and life satisfaction”?

In The Big Leap, Gay Hendricks describes four zones: incompetence, competence, excellence, and genius. Everything you do falls into one of these zones, but happily, they’re different for everyone. One person’s incompetence is another person’s genius.

For a happy, fulfilled and successful life, you want to maximize the time you spend in your Zone of Genius. In your business, your unique Zone of Genius includes the things that you love to do, that you’re uniquely talented at, and that can bring in the most money because you do them better than anyone else.

But to live in your Zone of Genius, you must first fire yourself from the other three zones.

The Zone of Incompetence

The Zone of Incompetence includes all the activities you’re not good at.

It’s worthwhile to spend time here if it’s on something you’re working to master. I’m still incompetent on the pottery wheel, but I’d love to get better at it, so my time and energy spent making weird-shaped bowls isn’t wasted.

However, I have no desire to be an IT expert – so when my computer starts acting up, I call someone who can fix it quickly.

It’s surprisingly easy to get bogged down in the Zone of Incompetence. It’s also the first place to start firing yourself. Avoid or delegate these activities as much as you can!

The Zone of Competence

These are the activities you’re pretty good at… but lots of other people are equally skilled. These are also tasks that don’t produce any excitement. If you spend too long on them, you probably feel drained.

Once you develop competence at something, you might start to feel like you “should” keep doing it. I know business owners who have held on to routine tasks like bookkeeping for far too long. Ultimately, not letting go comes at a cost – that time would have been more valuable had they fired themselves much sooner.

The Zone of Excellence

This is the danger zone. You do these activities extremely well. You’re reliable and steady, and people keep coming back for more. However, time spent on these activities doesn’t give you energy. If you keep doing them, you’ll get bored, frustrated, or burn out.

If you’ve ever felt stuck in your business, like you’re just going through the motions or “comfortably numb”, you might be stuck in your Zone of Excellence.

In business, excellence may not be the kind of strategic differentiator that drives profit. It’s likely that your competitors are also capable of excellence.

Hard as it may be, firing yourself from the things that you are excellent forces you to live squarely in your Zone of Genius.

The Zone of Genius

Your Zone of Genius holds the activities you are uniquely suited for, the things you wake up excited to do more of. They draw on your “superpowers”- your special gifts and strengths. Often, these are also the things that have the potential to bring in the most money for your business. That’s why this is called “the ultimate path to success and life satisfaction.”

Looking back at your day, week, or month, how much time have you spent in your zone of genius?

This Week’s Takeaway

Firing yourself from activities that you’re incompetent at is relatively easy. It’s harder to fire yourself from the things you’re competent or excellent at. But as you move closer to your Zone of Genius, what would that mean for your overall life satisfaction?

Here’s a key question from Hendricks:

“In my work, what produces the highest ratio of abundance and satisfaction to the amount of time spent?”

Maybe the answer to that can help you with your plan for the year ahead.
